San Domenico Palace Hotel
Taormina, Sicily, Italy
Built on the original structures of a former Dominican Monastery dating back to the 15th century, the San Domenico Palace Hotel is located in Taormina which offers a wonderful and enchanting atmosphere. Settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, Taormina dominates two grand sweeping bays below and is on the southern side of Europe's highest active volcano - Mount Etna.
San Domenico Palace was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1896 by the descendants of the monastery’s founder, Damiano Rosso, a nobleman from Catania of the Rosso di Altavilla princely family, who built and donated it afterwards, with all its goods to the friars when he became himself a Dominican of the same monastery.
Since then the San Domenico Palace, from being a place completely dedicated to the soul health and to the in-depth analysis of the Christian faith, has become one the most famous hotel in the whole Sicily.
Principe Cerami Restaurant
History and culture, charm and poetry, knowing love for cuisine: such are the exclusive ingredients of the Principe Cerami Restaurant, a veritable atelier of haute cuisine. The restaurant is named after the Sicilian noble who came into possession of the Dominican monastery in 1866 and converted it into a hotel.
An innovative philosophy of hospitality has flourished ever since within the walls of these charming and lovely facilities. Fantasy and inspiration triumph at the Principe Cerami, in its settings, on its tables, in its food, in its service. A harmony of colours, a caress of soft lights and starry panoramas overlooking the Ionian Sea among age-old fragrances, delicate flavours and ecstasy of taste.
The Sicilian gastronomic tradition shines through and is magically renewed by the creative artistry of the chef, Massimo Mantarro - a passionate interpreter of traditional Sicilian cuisine. His innovative creations are strongly inspired by the rich local gastronomic heritage, frequently combined with exotic ingredients.
Enchanting Atmosphere
It's an enchanting atmosphere, where it’s possible to breathe in walking through the broad white corridors where for nearly half a millennium only the hushed footfalls and psalmodies of the friars were heard. Monastic remains are religiously kept at the San Domenico to testify to a past that makes such a structure unique: the cloister, images of saints, the choir stall, the sacristy, the gorgeous garden, the rooms which used to be silent cells given over to seclusion.
Everything recalls monastic life, a blatant contrast – and because of it even more fascinating – with the luxury hotel ensconced within these ancient walls. A fascination that ever since its opening has attracted poets, writers, film stars, royal families, and heads of state, who have filled the ancient pages of the jealously guarded Golden Book with their dedications. |
